Shotokan Karate

There are several fundamental styles of karate which place varying degrees of emphasis on speed, strength and range of techniques. Shotokan karate, developed by Master Funakoshi, was the first form of karate and emphasizes a balanced development of all these aspects. The name Shotokan means 'the clan of Shotokan', with Shoto being the pen name used by Funakshi when writing his poetry.

Like any martial art, Shotokan has its share of philosophy. Much of the teachings of Shotokan are the same as you would get from any other art. Some are specific to this art. I will deal with some of each, martial art general and Shotokan specific. The philosophy section is broken up as follows:

Shoto Dojo kuntsu

Hitotsu. Makoto no Michi wo Mamoru Koto.
One. Defend the Path of Truth

Hitotsu. Doryoku no Seishin o Yashinau Koto.
One. Strive to Excel

Hitotsu. Reigi o Omonzuru Koto.
One. Be Courteous

Hitotsu. Kekki no Yu o Imashimuru Koto.
One. Refrain from Violence

Be faithful

Endeavor

Respect others
